Posted on September 1st, 2017
Over 18,400 retired National Football League players or their relatives have registered to receive benefits in the multidistrict litigation (MDL No. 2323) over brain injuries former players suffered from during their sports careers. August 7, 2017, was the final deadline for players to register for the NFL settlement program.
The settlement program includes:
-
An uncapped monetary fund for qualified players
-
$75 million Baseline Assessment Program that provides eligible retired players with neurological examinations
-
$10 million education fund to advocate safety and injury prevention in youth football and inform former players about their medical benefits
Depending on the severity of the sustained injuries, a plaintiff may receive anywhere from a $1.5 million award for declines in cognitive functions to a $5 million award for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
